Becerra was born to Jose and Severa Becerra and passed away on March 31, 2018. He was raised in Rosenberg and attended Rosenberg High School.

Army Service

After being drafted by the United States Army to serve in World War II, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, 28th Infantry Division, and was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent five months as a prisoner of war before he and three others escaped.

Career & Public Service in Rosenberg

Upon his return to the United States, Becerra focused on his career in Rosenberg, working as an insurance agent, barber, bail bondsman, and dancehall owner. Striving to make a difference in the community, Becerra served as a precinct judge and consistently supported efforts to register voters. Serving on Rosenberg City Council from 1992 to 2005, he remained a dedicated servant to the public.

City Councilor Jimmie J. Peña said. Mr. Becerra has always contributed to the welfare of the community. We need leaders and we’ve found leaders. Mr. Becerra is a leader. Becerra’s community involvement often took a hands-on approach when it came to helping those in need. His family recalled many occasions where his desire to help others was felt within the community.

When he was a barber he would help the community church by cutting the hair of the priests free of charge. As a life insurance agent, there were many times he would pay for his clients who could not afford to make their monthly payments, Becerra’s son, Anthony said. He was constantly helping the poor and immigrants who needed help. Tony Becerra has truly been a blessing to many people and he is a man who never forgot where he came from.
